Travel Insurance
To avoid jockeys having to worry about insurance cover when abroad, PJA members can relax in the knowledge that they have the following cover. Please note full Terms and Conditions apply and are available via the PJA.
Policy Details
Certificate Number: APL01588GPA
Assured: The Professional Jockey Association
Period of Insurance: 01 January 2025 to 31 December 2025 (both days inclusive)
Insured Persons: All full members of the PJA or those who have temporarily relinquished their licence due to local racing authority requirements, but have held a UK licence in the 60 days preceding a claim.
Geographical Limits: Worldwide cover includes trips to Channel Islands provided such trips involve an overnight stay or a flight in an aircraft. Cover extends to include incidental holiday travel, within country of business.
Operative Time: While an Insured Person is on an Insured Trip on business outside the United Kingdom, cover starting from the time of leaving an Insured Person’s place of residence or place of work in the United Kingdom whichever is last, until return to an Insured Person’s place of residence or place of work in the United Kingdom, whichever is the first. Cover includes horse riding, including racing.
Duration: Maximum 60 days any one trip.
Extending the policy
Cover can be extended beyond 60 days for a maximum of 180 days any one trip, subject to the:
- PJA being notified by the Jockey before the 60-day period has expired
- Trip being declared to underwriters on a quarterly basis
- Additional premium being paid.
Cost to extend the cover is:
– Europe: £1.68 per day, incl. IPT
– USA & Canada: £2.80 per day, incl. IPT
– Rest of World: £2.52 per day, incl. IPT
Failure to do so will result in any claim occurring after the 60-day period being restricted to Rescue Expenses only.

Channel Islands. Medical & Emergency Expenses Travel Expenses is limited to £50,000 and covers inpatient treatment only. Cover only applies in excess of those recoverable under any reciprocal agreements.
Exclusions: The policy does not provide cover for war between the major powers or war in Europe, nuclear, chemical or biological war and/or terrorism, war and/or terrorism to specified high risk areas unless accepted by insurers (refer to Insurance Policy for full details), radioactive contamination, suicide, attempted suicide or intentional self-injury, flying as a pilot, any natural occurring condition or degenerative process or gradually operating cause, claims due to the insured being under the influence of or affected by drugs, alcohol or solvents, medical expenses where the insured is travelling against medical advice or for the purpose of receiving medical treatment or advice, Coronavirus disease (COVID-19); severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2); any mutation or variation of SARS-CoV-2.
** Legal Expenses excludes any claim in connection with the insured person’s business or occupation.
