Peace of Mind

Private Health Insurance

Unfortunately, we have been informed by BUPA that the PJA scheme covering professional jockeys will be closed to all new applicants from 1st November 2023.

Existing policy holders (who had a policy through the PJA group scheme prior to 1st November 2023) will be unaffected, and their cover will continue as long as they renew their policy and don’t let it lapse.

As far as we are aware, the PJA BUPA scheme is the only private healthcare scheme that covers professional jockeys for race riding injuries so we are unfortunately currently unable to advise on a suitable alternative provider of private healthcare for jockeys.

IJF Contributions Towards Private Healthcare Insurance

Licensed PJA members with an existing policy, who have had up to 350 rides the previous season, are eligible to claim the following contributions from the IJF towards the cost of their private healthcare insurance by sending a copy of their healthcare certificate to the IJF Head Office in Newmarket:

Grade 1£650
Grade 2£600
Grade 3£500
Grade 4£450
Grade 5£400
Grade 6£350

Apprentice and Conditional Jockeys contributions

  • Year 1 – 100% of premium
  • Year 2 – 50% or £650 if higher
  • Year 3 – 25% or £650 if higher

IMPORTANT

If jockeys already have their own health insurance they should check their policy carefully to ensure they are covered for racing as not all health insurance providers cover professional sportspeople.
