Good nutrition is essential to all sports and for jockeys, it is vital in order to maintain weight healthily and consistently which will help them perform at their best. Our team understands the hectic lifestyle of a jockey and are perfectly placed to offer nutritional support with dietary queries, making weight, and menu ideas to help jockeys gain that athlete mindset and give them the edge they need.

Jockeys are able to get in touch with the Nutrition Team for free confidential advice, support, and information or to arrange a one-to-one consultation at a time or venue to suit you. Remote services via phone or video call are also available:

  • Weekly clinics at the three IJF centres: Peter O’Sullevan House, Newmarket on Mondays, Oaksey House, Lambourn and at Jack Berry House, Malton on Thursdays. Contact the team or the IJF Centres directly to book an appointment.
  • On course – the team conduct period racecourse visits to support weighing-room catering.

Meet The Team

Dan Martin (Team Leader, North & LJMU) Tel: 07902 151916

Dan is a SENr accredited Performance Nutritionist and Chartered Sport & Exercise Scientist and has been with the team since 2014. Dan’s main role is working with the industry’s key stakeholders to ensure the nutrition support is in place right across the industry. He works closely with the licensing schools, the Jockey Coaching Programme, racecourse executives, the Injured Jockeys Fund, research institutes such as Liverpool John Moores University, and BHA Medical to collaborate in the implementation of an industry-wide, licensing-to-retirement nutrition support service.

You will see Dan at the National Horseracing College where he delivers the nutrition modules on license courses and in weighing rooms where. He completed a BHA-funded PhD into jockey nutrition and behaviour change at Liverpool John Moores University, followed by three more years of Postdoctoral Research there. Away from horseracing Dan also works for Team GB’s Olympic Equestrian team, a Premier League football club, and heads up performance coaching and sports science for a Formula 1 race team.

Hannah is a Registered Performance Dietitian who joined the team in April 2018 and is based at Oaksey House in Lambourn on Thursdays. Alongside her work in racing, she also retains her clinical role within the NHS, as well as seeing private clients and supporting sports clubs and teams.

Oliver Whiteman (Newmarket) Tel: 07534 080829

Oliver joined the team in January 2020 and is based at Peter O’Sullevan House in Newmarket every Monday. Oliver, who is an SENr accredited Performance Nutritionist, also provides support to the neighbouring BRS, delivering on their licensing courses. Outside of jockey support, Oliver works in a Premier League football academy. 

Lee Rickards (Jack Berry House) Tel: 07584 903862

Lee joined the team in January 2023 and is based at Jack Berry House every Thursday. SENr and ISAK accredited Performance Nutritionist who is currently undertaking the final part of his PhD at Sheffield Hallam University on fruit derived polyphenols and recovery from muscle damage. Currently working as a performance nutrition consultant in professional boxing and the UFC for boxing science. Past experience includes working for Sheffield United Football Club for 9 years.
