Martin Lane presents Shelley Birkett after winning The Racing Excellence Initiative title  Pic Dan Abraham -  Newmarket 1.11.13The BHA introduced a Jockey Coaching and Mentoring Scheme in 2011.  It is funded via deductions made from a Jockeys’ and Trainers accounts (5% of the Riding fee for 7lb and 5lb Apprentices and 10% for 3lb Apprentices; 3.75% of the riding fee for 7lb Conditionals and 7.5% for 5lb and 3lb Conditionals).  The scheme is designed to further improve the skills of young Jockeys and to develop all round sports people.

The Jockey Coaches have all previously had very successful professional careers themselves.  Their role includes one-to-one tuition, supervised course walks* and post-race analysis.  Jockeys are coached in all aspects of their careers from technical support, motivation, confidence, fitness and communication skills.  Jockeys receive coaching until they have ridden out their claim with the principal aim of ensuring each apprentice and conditional can reach their full potential.

All Jockey Coaches are UKCC qualified in order to keep in line with mainstream sports and will provide the Jockeys with approximately two hour one-to one sessions twice a month.
