Private Medical Insurance

Private Medical Insurance (PMI)

The PJA advises all Jockeys to take out PMI cover as soon as they become licensed as by doing so it reduces the number of “exclusions” for pre-existing illness and injuries. With PMI cover the Jockey will also avoid any unnecessary wait for treatment as is often the case if they have to rely on the NHS and by being treated promptly you will have a shorter period on the sidelines.

As a member of The Professional Jockeys Association, Jockeys receive a 30% discount from BUPA when they join their ‘BupaCare’ Scheme. This cover provides the following benefits for eligible medical conditions:

  • Out-patient treatment
  • Day-case and in-patient treatment and
  • Other benefits, which may include physiotherapy, home nursing and NHS cash benefit (all subject to an annual limit).

Bupa accepts referrals for treatment from the PJA ‘s Medical Advisor, Anna-Louise Mackinnon as well as the Jockeys’ own GP.

An incentive for Jockeys to purchase PMI cover is the generous contribution made by The Injured Jockeys Fund to Jockeys Grades 2 to 6.

Current contributions are:-

  • Grade 2 (75-114 rides in previous season) - £500.00
  • Grade 3 (115-154 rides in previous season) - £400.00
  • Grade 4 (155-199 rides in previous season) - £350.00
  • Grade 5 (200–249 rides in previous season) - £300.00
  • Grade 6 (250–349 rides in previous season) - £250.00

APPRENTICE AND CONDITIONALS who are on ½ fees are able to claim back 50% of the cost of Private Medical Insurance from their Trainers as part of their Training Agreement.
