BHA Medical department
Safety and education underpin all aspects of work undertaken by the Medical Department of the British Horseracing Authority. These are co-ordinated by Dr Michael Turner, the Chief Medical Adviser. He is ably assisted by his secretary Helen Pavitt
Responsiblities of the Medical Department:
Concussion Bounty
If you suffer a concussion whilst racing under Rules (which involves a red entry) the British Horseracing Authority will offer Jockeys an £80.00 voucher for the purchase of a replacement helmet.
The bounty applies to all helmets that conform to the following criteria:
- Meet (BS) EN 1384: 1997 or EN 1384: 1996 or EN 13158: 2009 or PAS 015: 1994 standard.
- Have a CE marking (if manufactured after 30 June 1995)
- Be in a serviceable condition
The damaged helmet must be sent through to Dr Turner, Chief Medical Advisor at The British Horseracing Authority, 75 High Holborn, London WC1V 6LS before the bounty voucher is issued.
Frequency of Medical Examinations
All Riders
Upon initial application a Medical Report from applicant’s own General Practitioner (GP).
Full Flat Jockeys
Medical Report from applicant’s doctor at 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of age. Upon reaching 48 years, annual examination by the BHA Chief Medical Adviser (CMA) but not own GP unless otherwise advised by CMA.
Full Jump Jockeys
Medical Report from applicant’s GP at 25, 30 and 35 years of age. Upon reaching 37 years, annual examination by the BHA Chief Medical Adviser (CMA) but not own GP unless otherwise advised by CMA. Under current British Medical Association Guidelines, the Jockey’s General Practitioner is likely to charge a fee. This is the responsibility of the Jockey.
No fee will be payable by the Jockey when annual examinations are carried out by the Chief Medical Advisor.
