The Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme
The Jockeys Employment & Training Scheme (JETS) is a career development initiative funded by a deduction from Jockeys’ prize money; and topped up by The Injured Jockeys Fund. JETS is here to help Jockeys throughout their riding and future careers. It is supported by the PJA and managed by Lisa Delany (Manager), and Sandy Thwaites (Promotions & Business Manager) and is based at the PJA offices.
JETS recognises the fact that all Jockeys will have a second career after race-riding. They can:
- Provide one-to-one career development coaching to help identify second career goals early in a Jockey’s race-riding career in order to plan ahead for the future.
- Help with identifying additional skills Jockeys may wish to learn throughout their working life and put a training action plan together. Retired Jockeys are in a position to start retraining immediately. For current Jockeys, JETS can arrange one-off or continuous training programmes, in conjunction with riding commitments.
- Provide Training in key areas like media, marketing and computer training which will benefit both Jockeys now and in future careers. JETS runs subsidised group training courses in such skills on a regular basis – all tailor made to Jockeys’ needs and circumstances.
- Provide Advice on where and how to access the type of training and courses which will suit particular needs and circumstances. Some training, for example, can be done during injury time.
- Provide Grants to help towards the cost of retraining/training in new skills.
- Help you look and apply for jobs – through advice on creative job search, applications, CVs and interview techniques.
- Provide life-long support: JETS encourage Jockeys to keep in touch throughout their working lives and are here to help through any career doubts, and career or job changes.
ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES – If a Jockey fall into one of the following categories, they may well qualify for free assistance and training grants from JETS.
